Movie opens with a chase scene, we see Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) in a little ship chasing and shooting at Sonic through the streets of San Francisco.
Sonic starts narrating about how he knows we, the viewer(s), are wondering what’s going on.
We see a flashback to Sonic as a child running through his home island on his home planet. His island is straight from the first level of the original video game.
He runs into his treehouse home where he lives with a larger (armored) female owl named, Longclaw. She’s referred to as his Obi-Wan Kenobi. She clearly plays a parental/mentor figure.
She was upset about him running through the island, worried that someone would have seen him. Sonic wasn’t worried about that, since he’s so fast.
We see a small tribe of native islanders coming up to the treehouse. They all have a similar look to Knuckles from the video game franchise, reddish bodies, dreadlock looking hair and two protruding knuckles on each fist.
The Knuckles-like islanders start shooting their bows and arrows at Sonic and Longclaw. She protects young Sonic from the arrows and they fly away. One of the arrows hits Longclaw and they go down in the woods.
Longclaw warns Sonic about his power, how it’s unlike anything, which means he’s always in danger because someone will aways want it. She throws a power ring that opens a portal to Earth, and gives him the pouch of remaining rings. She makes him go through and as the portal closes we see the islanders start to attack her and the portal closes.
Sonic lives the next ten years in Green Hills, Montana. He has a cave in the woods that he keeps stocked with enough stuff to stay entertained. We also see a map of worlds and he lets us know that if he has to leave Earth, the last safe world is the Mushroom Planet. Which is a stinky planet literally made up of nothing but mushrooms.
He keeps himself busy and does a lot of people watching. His favorite person in town is the Donut Lord, which is what he calls the police officer, Tom (James Marsden).
Outside Tom’s house while Tom and his wife, Maddie (Tika Sumpter) watch movies together, Sonic watches with them through the window. He feels like he’s part of the family, even though they don’t know he’s there.
Tom also finds out that he was accepted to San Francisco’s Police Dept. So His wife goes to California early to start looking for apartments.
Sonic’s loneliness starts to get to him as he continues to spend his life in isolation. One night he’s at the local baseball diamond, playing all the positions. He scores a run against himself and realizing there was no one there to celebrate with or give him a real high five, he gets upset. He starts running faster around the plates and ends up going so fast that he causes a power surge that knocks out all of the power across the entire Pacific Northwest.
This gets the attention of the government, who hire Dr. Robotnik to investigate. Robotnik uses his robotic technology to quickly track down Sonic. Knowing he’s busted, Sonic decides to go to the Mushroom Planet. But since he was surrounded he ran to Tom’s house to hide in the garage before using the power ring, so he couldn’t be followed.
Tom hears something in the garage, thinking it's just a garbage panda, he takes a tranquilizer gun to investigate. He panics and ends up shooting Sonic in the leg with a tranq. dart. As Sonic starts to pass out, he sees Tom’s t-shirt of San Francisco, which made the power ring open a portal there instead of the Mushroom Planet. As he falls over, he drops the pouch of power rings through the portal, and they land on the roof of a sky scraper. Sonic goes unconscious, and the portal closes.
Tom takes him inside the house and hides him. Robotnik tracks Sonic to Tom’s house and lets himself in to investigate. Knowing Sonic is there somewhere, he has a weaponized robot drone aim at Tom, and gives him to the count of five to give up Sonic.
Sonic, worried for Tom’s life jumps out of hiding. This startles Robotnik, and Tom punches him in the face and knocks him out. They disable the drone and go on the run together to San Francisco to retrieve the rest of the power coins. Robotnik sends different tech after them along their trip, but they keep defeating his robots. However the last robot they encounter, ends up being a bomb that goes off in close proximity and knocks Sonic unconscious.
They make it to San Francisco, and go see Maddie, who’s staying at her sister’s house. Maddie is also a veterinarian, Tom hopes she can help Sonic. He eventually wakes up due to some smelling salts. Maddie agrees to help them get to the building where his rings got lost at. Also Maddie’s niece gave sonic a pair of new red shoes because his were all torn up.
When they got to the building they’re attacked once again by Robotnik, and all his drones. Sonic shoves Tom and Maddie off of the building, the drones all open fire on Sonic, he goes into hyper speed to destroy all the drones before the missiles could hit him, and he plans to use a power ring to save Tom and Maddie before they hit the ground.
Earlier, Robotnik acquired one of the quills (blue spikes) from Sonic, that was still charged with his power. He connected to it the ship he was currently in, and when Sonic went into his hyper speed, Robotnik hit a button to engage Sonic’s powers from the spike for his ship, and it made the ship go as fast as Sonic, even at hyper speed.
Sonic was able to save Tom and Maddie by warping them home with a power ring. Robotnik chases sonic through the streets of San Francisco, and this is where the movie opened.
Sonic uses the power rings to warp around the world while Robotnik keeps up with him and follows him to each location. Sonic gets hit with a blast from Robotnik’s ship as he’s going through a portal leading back to Green Hills. His body lands in the middle of town unconscious. Tom picks up the power rings that fell in the blast, and used one to sneak up behind Robotnik, and attacks him before he can kill Sonic.
Robotnik knocks him out of the ship, the locals turn on Robotnik. He asks why any of them would defend Sonic, since he’s not from this planet and doesn’t actually belong here. Tom tells him that Sonic is his friend. This news wakes Sonic up.
Sonic charges up his powers and by charging them, he’s able to get the power back from his spike that’s being used to power Robotnik’s ship. He then runs towards the ship, Robotnik opens fire, Sonic dodges all the missiles, turns himself into a little energy ball and hits the ship. He does this many times from every angle.
He stops attacking the ship long enough for Tom to throw a power ring behind the ship that opened a portal to the Mushroom Planet. Sonic then charges up one more time, and hits the ship with enough force to completely destroy it and knock it, with Dr. Robotnik, through the portal.
At the end of the movie, Tom decides not to take the job in San Francisco. Him and Maddie surprise Sonic by moving everything from his cave in the woods to the attic of their house.
Robotnik is seen on the Mushroom Planet, he’s using a shard of metal to shave his head. His mustache has also grown quite large, and he’s now taking on more of the look of the Robotnik from the video games. We see that he still has some of his tech that survived the explosion, and pieces of scrap metal from his ship he’s carrying on his back. He also pulls up one of Sonic’s charged spikes, and makes a comment on how a lesser man would die on that planet, but he’ll be home by Christmas.
Mid-Credit Scene: A brief storyline of the entire movie is played out in the style of the classic Sega Genesis Sonic game. After it’s done, we see a power ring open on the edge of a cliff overlooking Green Hills and Tails comes through with a tracking device. He looks at it and says, “If these readings are accurate, he’s here. I found him. I just hope I’m not too late.” Then Tails jumps off the edge and uses his tails to fly, and he flies off toward the town in a fast blur.
Joe (Nick Robinson) lives with his bitter, widower father, Frank (Nick Offerman) and the two have quite the dysfunctional relationship.
Joe has a crush on his friend Kelly (Erin Moriarty), and hangs out with his best friend, Patrick (Gabriel Basso).
Patrick also has an unhappy home life with his overbearing parents (Marc Evan Jackson, and Megan Mullally) who are still treating their teenage son like a small child. His home life has become so upsetting, that he’s actually getting hives from living there with them.
The night of the last day of school, Joe sneaks out of his house to attend an outdoor high school kegger. He meets up with his friends at the party and they also get accompanied by a random strange teenager named Biaggio (Moises Arias). The party was broken up by an angry neighbor shooting a gun to scare the loud high schoolers that were disrupting the night.
While walking home from the party, Joe and Biaggio come across an opening in the woods. Joe starts to plan for Patrick and himself to build a house in the woods and live on their own. Patrick is reluctant at first, but after a bit more time with his folks, he agrees. Biaggio also joins in, mainly because he showed up and Joe was too scared to tell him to leave.
They spend the beginning of the summer constructing a house made up of materials they gather around town. Once the house is built, they run away and live in their new house in the woods.
Too freaked out to hunt, Joe and Biaggio find a nearby Boston Market. They keep buying chicken while telling Patrick they hunted it, which he eventually finds out about.
One day Joe goes and finds Kelly, tells her about their house in the woods and invites her to visit. She swings by and brings a couple of friends. During the middle of the night Joe hears Kelly approaching, she ends up waking up Patrick to go for a walk with her. Joe lies awake all night, crushed that his best friend spent all night with the girl he likes.
Patrick and Kelly become a couple, and this drives a big wedge between him and Joe. They get in a fight one night and Joe demands Patrick leaves the house. Patrick wants to get past their feud and make things work. Joe eventually gets so angry, he stomps on Patrick’s hurt foot (which has been in a walking cast the entire movie). Patrick gets mad and throws a piece of furniture through a wall and leaves.
Biaggio also leaves that night leaving Joe all alone in the woods to take care of himself. He runs out of money to buy chicken, and has to learn to hunt, skin, & clean animals.
Joe was sitting down to eat a dinner he prepared for himself, when an empty chair across the table starts to move. He looks under the table to investigate and he discovers it was actually a copperhead snake. This shocks Joe and he falls out of his chair, and the snake slithers right up to him. Joe calms himself to keep his heart rate down, to keep the snake from sensing his fear.
The next morning, Kelly goes to Joe’s dad and tells him she’ll take him to Joe.
When Kelly and Frank approach the house, Joe warns them to stay back because of the snake. The snake heads over to Kelly and she falls over, but Joe jumps between her and the snake. Just then Biaggio shows up with a machete, taunting the snake. The snake bites Biaggio in the leg, and Joe grabs the machete and kills it.
After the snake is buried, Joe, Kelly, and Frank rush to get Biaggio to the hospital.
Biaggio recovers from the bite. Joe and Frank reconnect, and you can see that something has changed in their relationship, and they seem to understand & respect each other. Joe also makes up with Kelly and they stay friends. Joe and Patrick still don’t speak to each other.
On the way home from the hospital, Joe is riding with his dad, and Patrick riding with his parents pull up next to Joe and Frank at a red light. Joe and Patrick see each other, give each other the finger, and share friendly smirks and laugh to themselves. Frank asks Joe what’s going on, he smiles and says, “Patrick’s just being an idiot.”
The light turns green and both cars drive their separate ways.
Post Credit Scene: We see Biaggio back in the woods hanging out by himself, smoking a pipe, and meditating.
